Basically you power the drive via the 360 else it throws a red light to indicate the drive has failed, whilst at the same time attaching the drive via sata cable to PC, some drives are easier than others to do as well as some flash easier dependant on mobo chip set.

As Trig says though, the gamble is if it should give the red ring of death after flashing the warranty is void, I had the red ring, turned out to be the PSU, cheap PC psu & rewiring the cable fixed that though.

As has been said by Bob already, I've only ever really been interested in the PC and upgrading as and when necessary.
I'm gonna wait a while before getting a PS3, but may get an Xbox 360 in the meantime. It's a money thing - don't want to pay too much when I don't need to. Patience is a virtue... and a few more quid in me pocket...
