Hi guys, well I am having another stab at Vista64. this time I have gotten mediacentre to work with my hd rips (I never realised there was a wmp for 32 and 64 bit). Cod4 is fine, bf2 to stick in tomorrow. As long as it works I will keep it going. I have left the xp partition alone so I can boot back into that if things go nips north.
Any tips from the more enlightened ?

I just don't find it any more stable than XP atm. Got a few hardware issues cropped up aswell which have meant that it's really getting on my tits.
I used an old method of authenticating and think that may be messing with my install, as soon as I move into the new house I'll be reinstalling with all updates and see how it goes.
Only got 2Gb ram in the machine now but will be pushing that up to 4 as mobo (680i board) doesn't like all dimm slots populated while overclocking, therefore need to pick up 2x2Gb sticks and will try and get Pc8000 or Pc8500 stuff second hand I think.
My CD drive has a dodgy SATA connection so that's going to be put into the media centre and glued on.
I don't know if it's vista or dodgy Nvidia raid/sata drivers that are conflicting with Vista but they're helluva unstable for me so won't be installing those when I get my system back up and running on reinstall.

In my experience, vista and nvidia drivers just do not go hand in hand, especially if you're trying to run a HD setup.
I am STILL having problems with my nforce 2 drivers and vista (but i think that's more to do with the paradox crack thing and it's issues with nforce 2 boards)
My nvidia graphics card never did work very well.
It does just seem to be a big list of compromises but once you get it running the way you want it, it's brilliant, runs nice and fast, stable (i don't think my media center has crashed at all once i had it set up correctly) and i think it looks great, i can even run Autocad on it now which was my only real gripe.
