Everyone back at work now then? :P

Now is the cheapest time really, or april, but the snow can be iffy.

Total cost to stay in this chalet is around £3000 for the chalet for the week which sleeps 8, so 3000/8 = £375

Flights to Geneva are around £100 return

Ski hire is £60 for a week, buy a jacket and gloves etc from tkmax = £150

Lift pass is £140

So you're looking at around £825 per person for this particular catered chalet, that sounds a lot, but it includes all food, drink etc. The only extra you spend is on drinks in the bars and food up the mountain.

You can do it cheaper if you get a package deal or stay in a hotel somewhere, but you'll probably end up spending about the same anyway.

I normaly budget about £1k for a weeks skiing holiday to france.

Check out some places like bulgaria which are up and coming resorts and can be a lot cheaper.

Oh, and don't ski, snowboard instead, it's much better!

Hi Andrew

Skiing is undoubtedly the most enjoyable sport to learn....slightly less so for Boarding. As Hippy says, buy jacket/tousers/gloves/goggles from TKM. Arrange hire and lessons when you book...prepay for as much as possible including lift pass. Lots of people think you get better deals arranging these things yourself...which is not true. Only time you need to arrange things yourself is when you get good and need to hire quality skis.

It IS an expensive sport/holiday. Cheapest time of year is now....book late and get some fantastic bargains (best to book less than 2 weeks ahead). Check out snow reports. No point in getting a cheap holiday if they dont have any snow!

Cheapest places are Eastern Europe. Watch out for dodgy food, lack of snow, busing to resort, walking a long way to lifts, big queues..... When you get keen you will want a snowsure resort high up in the Alps, skiing to and from your hotel/chalet/appartment, few queues at lifts and on the piste, good food..... Be aware that the cost of drinks and food in a mountain restaurant is astronomical. You seriously will not believe it! Other places to consider for a cheapy are Andorra, Pyrennes and Scotland (looks like they may get snow this year). Careful with some of the French Alps cheap holidays. Appartments are tiny and claustrophobic and supermarkets and eating out very expensive, making these a false economy.

My favourite skiing holidays are Chalets. Food is all in (Breakfast, Tea and Dinner). You meet other people, often have the services of a skiing guide and the accomodation tends to be nicer and more convenient. You can also take your duty free and drink the evenings away with your new found friends in the comfort of your chalet lounge. Of course you younger ones could make for the Apres-Ski bars which are great if you have the stamina.

I have been skiing now for 22 years. Last year I got rid of my own skis and hired some new fangled top of the range skis. I had so much FUN with them and learnt tonnes! I am addicted to skiing and even now when I dont have the holiday time or the money, am trying to find a way to get a cheaper somewhere.

Hope you succeed Andrew.....but watch out, you can get hooked.

Yeah to be honest I was going to goto Canada next year (09) but I still don't think i'll have enough cash to "do it right" as i'm away 2/3 times this year. It was my GF that keeps mentioning going ski'ing (no jokes here about poles :P ) so this thread got me thinking.

Clingy, a family friend who I used to work for goes ski'ing every year since he can remember and that were his comments about it been addictive and I wouldn't want to go back, i'd have to go back !

Oh and thanks for a Great post there Clingy, much appreciated :)

Here in Switzerland, we're not snow sure, but i'm looking out of the window at a blizzard, 22cm fell last night and another 15 are due to fall today.
I can ski from and back to the chalet (allbeit slightly off piste, onto a hard red).

Prices in the mountain restaurants aren't toooo bad here, we're talking 15CHF for burger and chips (about £6), but the food is crap, a beer or gluhvine is about 7chf (£3), so really not bad at all, however this place is marketed as an alternative to Verbier (on the other side of the resort) which is astranomical, we're talking £200 entry into clubs, £150 a head in restaurants. . . . Thyon, where i am is nothing like that.

Total up how much you spend on a normal holiday, i bet it comes to around £1k.

I think you should all come out :) it'll cost you around £3000 for the chalet for the week though.

Seriously, if you fancy it, check out the website www.mski.co.uk and give the owners a call, there may be some weeks which aren't full, you could book just the one room at a reduced cost, say you know me (Chris) and you'll get a 10% discount.

Some of my mates are out next week for £260 each.

I'll even cook your breakfast for you :)

Skiing and boarding both great fun.

Haven't been since coming back from Sweden but did get to go into hospital last year to get my shoulder re-built after my boarding incident.

Has GSV really been going on that long?

I remember all the stick I got from you lot telling you about my snowbaord accident.
Winter after that I broke my brother in laws leg,

then of course there is the slight boob I dropped with Mrs S.

Thanks for this thread it's reminded me of some of the real laughs I've had in here.
