The Police, Self Defence, Taking The Law Into Your Own Hands

Well, as I'm sure a few of you know the house I live in used to be council owned, there are still 2 council houses and 2 council flats on my road.
Well, last thursday some of the local knuckle draggers staged a bit of a setup at the house over the road..
A workman had been doing some work round the corner, while he'd been doing said work someone went thru his wallet, and using his credit card, ordered a fair amount of kit, small generator, several big boxes of tools etc. and had them delivered over the road. Litterally 5 minutes after the guy had dropped them off the girl that lives in the house arrived back with knuckle dragger 1 and his brother (KD2) and proceded to load all the stuff into the back of a car while the girl that lives there went and stood at the end of the road to keep watch.
Anyways, being the law abiding citizen I am I called it in, after all the girl that lives in the house whores herself out from the house, has drug parties and generally is a nusance to the area, only a few weeks ago I had to go out and stop some drugged up cockend trying to break into the car. (This girl first moved in with her b/f and 2 kids, the bf has since left and the kids have been taken away from her, yet she still lives in a 3 bed semi on her own..).
30 minutes after I called it in and explained the situation to the chap on the end of the phone, a PC turns up and procedes to talk to the girl that lives in the house (was stood in the front garden doing some gardening), now he was stood there for about 3/4 minutes talking away.
Then the problem starts, after talking to her he procedes to cross the road and walk straight upto my house and knocks on the door. Now as you can imagine I was not exactly impressed at this point and said so in my normal oh so subtle tone, he had after all just painted a big sign over my house saying here are the people that called the police. After a short chat he basically said that she'd said she'd been out, not seen anything etc etc and that what I had seen was probably one of KD1's "associates" and that there was nothing that could be done, the PC then went back over to the house, had a quick word with the girl and then left.
A few hours later the guy who dropped the kit off arrives with a few workmen, the missus goes out and explains whats happened to this guys kit, the guy who's card it was turns up and everything is explained (this is how we know where the kits was hired from/by etc)
I ring the police back to find out whats going off and erm, express my annoyance at the PC that came round straight after having spoken to someone who was in on the crime.
I'm pretty much told that as the only actual witness if I dont make a statement and possibly stand up in court that they cant really do anything.
But on saturday we get KD1/2/3 talking to the girl that lives over the road stood outside her house talking and pointing over at the house, KD1/2/3 then proceed to walk past the house, looking up the drive and talking about people calling the police etc.
I call the police and inform them that due to the careless nature of there original PC that I wont be making a statement, theres already intimidation going on and that due to having 2 kids, 2 dogs etc I'm staying out of it.
Late last night KD's associates drive past the house veeery slowly, go up the road, turn round and drive back past just as slowly.
Apparently today the girl over the road has been arrested and taken away in the back of a car, now obviously if this is anything to do with the original theft and as I've been essentially fingered by the police I need to be on my toes incase anything kicks off..
The bit that annoys me is KD1 is already known to the police, surely knowing who was involved the original PC was blatently irresponcible and has essentiall put my family at risk.
I dont live on my own anymore, if it was just me I'd give a lot less of a shit but I have a 6 month old and a 5 year old living with me now as well as the 2 dogs.
Where do you draw the line, I saw a crime, I reported it, now I'm waiting for sometihng to come thru the window and the police cant do anything about it until it actually happens, suppose they get into the house and I dont get time to grab a phone, what if they throw something over the fence for the dogs to eat, what if there kids beat up ours etc etc.
It boils my piss to know that there is next to nothing I can do legally and that I am essentially being intimidated in my own house and this knuckle dragging reprobate is pretty much walking round outside of the law and the law can do feck all about it.
I have already placed assorted weaponary around the house and have absoluetly no issues what so ever in litterally hammering the crap out of anyone that comes in uninvited, yet from a legal point of view I can only use necessery force to "subdue" anyone that breaks in.
grrrrr I'm fucking annoyed!

I think the law has been refined a bit with regard to "reasonable force". Sure you will be on dodgy ground if you shot/stabbed a Diddy in the back as he was running away (like our local farmer did), but if they were in the process of stealing or potentially attacking you and your family pretty much anything goes. In any event Trig, if you are like me you'd do the hammering and worry about the consequences later. There would be no way I would worry about what the law says if I caught someone in my house and that IS the one thing I would risk my life for (my family). In my view you lose all "human rights" the moment you break in somewhere.
Hope it doesn't come to anything like this.

Sometimes the law can't, and sometimes the law doesn't want to... sadly I have seen little else beyond these unless there are brownie points involved for them.
My son was attacked with a claw hammer by a local druggy at about 4pm in the afternoon for doing nothing more than his paper round. We were visited by a 5'2" blonde pixie on her own... of course, investigations were going to be made...
Trig, eventually, the late nights, jumping out of bed at every noise, going with your family members wherever they go "just for the walk", will ease up a bit... but it never leaves your mind.
I know it is a little late now, but here's a link to Crime Stoppers, you can phone them anonymously to report a crime:

Just be a nutter... life becomes much more exciting, and people won't expect anything more of you...

I Would strongly advise you get legal advice about the PC COCK UP and send them a letter holding them fully responsible for any problems that may now arise, Also put up CTV camers even a few cheap web cams over looking your property this will make someone think twice before doing anything stupid. Hope nothing does happen but remember property can be replace Family cant so protect them at all cost, and worry about what happens after.

Document it by date and time as much as you can. Make an official complaint, you want to be creating a police internal enquiry here. Make sure they know you want an official response about your complaint.
Then go to the local press and see if there interested in a story about police negligence endangering your kids and the intimidation thats gone on.
I've got some wireless CCTV stuff you hook up to a PC in my desk draw here if you want, works in the dark as well. Maybe put some CCTV notices up on your house, wether you have cameras or not. Add motion activated 100000000 watt lamps to the front and back.
If someone comes into my house I would presume they have a knife, I believe that is a useable defence.
