It exists. I hope it will give netbooks a boost.

I think they're expecting netbooks to die out this year, if the truth be told that is.

It's a psychological thing, people in general don't really like to own things which they believe have a restricted use. Getting a netbook for many people involves downsizing from a Laptop. If they already have a desktop, then they may not use the netbook for anything significant and will probably query their reason for getting one when the shine has gone.

I have my desktop, a laptop and my PDA. I hardly use my laptop and that is kept in the lounge on a desk there for those impromptu moments. On the road my PDA doesn't need a desk or any kind of worktop other than my hand. It can do everything a netbook can do but without the keys of a keyboard - which I could get if necessary.

The Netbook may end up as being the novelty of '09.

Sorry to disagree Claw, but IMO Net books are great and very useful. I use mine on a daily basis and have it with me at most times. It's only a Acer One and the old one at that but for carrying about it's great.
Being a Student I use it for taking notes in lectures and studying on trains and buses when travelling for more than a hour even surfing the internet on the move (out and about) it's great. I really don't think that I would have passed half my courses if it were not for my wee acer. Even being able to RDP into my home server to finish writing shell scripts was a life saver and for checking ogame when you realise that you messed up your fleetsave.
I agree that PDA's/Smart Phones can do a lot of what a net book can but if your typing out a document or anything bigger than a twitter update then a real keyboard is a must. All the use-ability of a normal large laptop in something no bigger than a book and weighting in at 1.2 kg.

Okay, I can see your reasoning, but if you were to upgrade what model would you move to that has any significant improvement to what you have at the moment to justify the upgrade? I think what's happening in the market is that the device is restricted by its purpose/function.

Perhaps it can be illustrated with the bicycle tyre. What more does it need to be? It's not the tyres that sells the bicycle. With the Netbook, once you have the device that is self-fulfilling the market stagnates very quickly. The only thing that will sell future Netbooks in any significant way would be a newer OS, and wear and tear requirements for replacement.

Basically, whoever has one isn't going to need another for a long time.... but on saying that I suppose you could say the same for anything really couldn't you? Perhaps the same for laptops, etc. But where there is a difference is the demand. I think the market has seen a novelty boom for the Netbook, but not one that is going to last considering its capabilities compared to a slightly larger laptop/notebook.

My PDA can use a keyboard if I wanted, I'm not sure about RDP but that's not something that I have use for. I use the handwriting feature of my PDA, it has my English-Russian dictionaries, and library, films, games, and whatever, and then fits in my pocket.

At the end of the day, your Netbook is everything you need it to be, and does exactly and possibly more than you need to do. My reference was to the Netbook market, I just think it is very limited. Only time will really tell I suppose. I have been known to be very, very wrong sometimes... :D

Which model would I upgrade too? No idea at all! haven't looked into it. I do agree with you though that normal people wouldn't be buying new models of Netbooks very often, just like normal people don't buy new laptops, desktops, Televisions, Mobile Phones, etc etc. I would be buying a new Desktop or Net Book for at least 3 years because I can't afford it or justify it. That doesn't mean that others wouldn't.

I see the future for Netbooks being in the business market more than the home market. The few times that I have been up in the morning and in commercial areas I have seen business wo/men going about with big 17 1/2 " Laptops and having trouble lugging them about. A Netbook could fit into a lunchBox or Handbag.

Anyway, you do make a good point but you are only really looking at it from one angle which is your view point/ life style not for others based on that you can't say whether or not it has a market. For example, those schooter things from the 90's where not any use for the british market as we don't have the weather and prefer the bicycle but in Europe they are everywhere and most people have one for going about.

My point is that, if something does not meet your needs, that doesn't mean that it doesn't meet someone else's needs. Each to their own is my view. But then I thought Laser Disks where cool. :gsv:

Netbooks having a lifecycle is not going to kill the market, everything has one. I'm waiting for the announcement of the iPad or whatever on the 27th Jan, depending on its feature's I may get one.

Nvidia are coming to market with the new chipset "Tegra 2" in a couple of months. Not for windows though, just android / linux / jolicloudy thing. It has potentially 16 hrs hd playback and 160 hrs music playback. Netpad, iPad, tablet format is going to be popular I think for the coffee table crowd this year I read mostly powered by arm and android / linux.

I was waiting for this chipset in a device for under the telly but got fedup waiting and used me old bits.

Ah, good point, and that makes a further case against the netbook. Why have another netbook when you can have an iPad, or similar. It will have an overall more satisfying functionality and they are very much on the horizon ready to step into the laptops and netbooks market.

The netbook just being smaller isn't going to be the 'thing' to have. The netbook has just been a step sideways, whereas tablet PC's and their ilk are that step forward.

The netbook still has a bright future. These new itablet / pad things will i think only be used for the playback of movies and the occasional mp3. As an input device they will be disasterous, with the onscreen keyboard instantly taking up half the screen. I would like to be able to scan an article again as I input my reply for instance. Give it a few months and the slider tablet will I am sure mane an appearance and look just like a giant slider phone. I think laptops will go that way too, it's inevitable given the way power consumption is going down drastically on these new devices.

For instance, new medion laptop 17" screen with under 2 hrs battery life, very heavy.WDF is that going to be good for? The only point of owning one is to use on a nice expensive antique table then put it away in a drawer when not in use.

Mobinnova beam netbook. 10" screen, full hd, fanless design, insanely long battery life, instant on, wired and wireless networking, hdmi out, very light. This is obviously designed as an entertainment device for music and movies and internet. Runs non windows only but who cares when its a toy for sound and flix. Text input is easy, you can take it away for days without a charge.

God its too early, went to bed at 8 feelin rough and been up since 5.30.

Taking what you have said Claw, Did the Iphone stop Nokia or any other brand selling phones? No it just made them release better phones. If you compare functionality of the Iphone 3G and the HTC Magic, Hardware wise they are similar but Software the HTC is Open Source so if the Iphone has something then the HTC gets it. Mac's are too strict with how can write software for their products so it keeps it very limited.

Also it's not just being smaller that's the selling point it's things like Battery life, functionality, Style and connectivity that sell the NetBook, that's just for the General Public. From a Tech POV it's so much more.

Okay, let's bump this thread in 6 months time then... as we both know, this market is a wild one and can throw a curve anytime regarding the movement of technology... :)

Interesting deduction Inspector...

That's an interesting article, wish I'd seen it sooner... I'd have used it as further evidence. However if you had read my opening comment on the subject:

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->I think they're expecting netbooks to die out this year, if the truth be told that is.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I'm obviously referring to other sources, with of course my observations on what trends I've seen of the last 25 years of the IT market.

What sparked my views is that there is going to be a component shortage which is going to boost the price of the component market for these sorts of devices. Will people want to spend a lot on something that does some things, or with a marginal price increase will they want to buy something that does much more but that is still within their budget. Netbook's are just so restricted, I personally cannot see a bright future for them.

I'm on the side that netbooks will have a place for a while.

Laptops are the new desktops, and became so because everyone wanted their laptop to do everything the desktop did and more. Play games etc. but was more portable than the desktop along with its CRT. Hence we now get only 2 hrs battery life out of it.

Netbooks came in to take the place of laptops and offered everything that laptops originally offered.

PDA's etc are great at what they do, and you've got things like the blackberry that try to cross the divide, but typing out more than a few replies on email gives me RSD in no time.

There was an argument that consoles would kill the PC market for games, but it's unlikely to, and we're getting consoles now that are starting to act more and more like PCs anyway.
360 with keyboard and mouse, access to internet, plugged into an HD TV?

Personally apart from the Wii, I still prefer my PC for games, so I suppose that for any gadget its mix of personal preference and lifestyle.
