These things can't happen on a Monday morning when you have all day and all week to get a replacement, no they have to happen on a Saturday evening at exactly 6pm just at the very moment every PC shop everywhere on the planet is closing its doors.

I was on the server when both Hammer and Marwin joined... then blip, everything off... :(

I've got a 400W PSU spare and some 350W, but I don't think it would be wise to work my way through them over the weekend.

The problem was that I wasn't sure if that wiff I mentioned on TS the other night was the newness of the video card or my PSU overworking.

The PSU that died was 550W, so I'm getting in a few spare PSU's from 650W upwards. But as was mentioned on TS it also comes down to the quality of the PSU I suppose.

Backing up the suggestion for quality is this Asus website which helps you assess your PSU requirements. It said my minimum requirement was 500W. So, my 550W was scraping the barrel, so-to-speak.

This PowerColor HD 4870 512MB GDDR5 is a power hungry beast... and requires 4 power plugs all to itself. I may introduce a second PSU just for the video card - but we'll see how we go on.

Upgraders beware!!

I'd take wattage with a pinch of salt and avoid cheap PSU's. Quality is what you want here. The 4870 is probably pulling to much power as you said. If you can install 2 lower spec PSU's 1 for the system and 1 for the GFX card great.
If not get s decent brand of PSU with a higher wattage. I have a Coolermaster 1250w in my rig.

At a push PC World is open today. We wondered where you went last night. I thought you had crashed or lost your internet connection.

Really grateful for this advice H... will drop by there and see what they have today.

Yeah, I was gutted when it died... I'm glad you didn't think that I did a runner just because the two most prolific collectors of my tags where the only other players on the server...

Before I bought a PSU I went through the reviews on Hardocp of 800w+ power supplies. Settled on a 1k one that was rated well. They literally do everything including torture tests, the one I have passed with flying colours and survived, some require fire extinguishers.

P.S. Corsair PSU's rate poorly as do OCZ ones. The standard names you expect for other PC equipment can be cheap PSU's and just badged up.

Torture Testing

The final component of our load testing involves our 8 hour torture test. This test is meant to simulate what gaming or hardware enthusiasts might encounter when they use their systems for extended periods of time under stressful conditions such as 3D gaming or long term stability testing and benchmarking. However though, we do not suggest using your power supply at 100% loads for extended periods of time and our torture test does reflect this. We load the PSU being tested to ~80% of its rated capacity for 8 hours at a temperature of 45c. This is outlined in our testing Methodology should you wish to have more information.

Ah well, a good reminder to do all the basic checks after a system failure... check cables. It wasn't the PSU that died, it was the fuse in the plug.

Replaced the power cable and it fired up nicely. I turned it off again and promptly went out to PC World to buy another PSU. After nearly assaulting a PC World Till assistant for trying to rob me I decided to leave them alone... he wasn't trying to rob me really, that genuinely was the price of their PSU's... (You did say "at a push" Mr. H, I wasn't suggesting it was your fault.)

Anyway, went to Maplins and bought a CiT 750W jobby for £50.00. If I'd have remembered the £5.00 voucher I got from them for my purchase of some pointless A42CX's recently it would have been cheaper, but that's life.

Now I just need to catch up with some work and I'll be gunnin' with y'all later. :aao2:

750 should be more then enough, I only went 1k as I didn't want to have to buy another until it burnt out.
