How Do Referral Sites Work?

As in this sort of thing

You know the type, sign up, refer 10 friends, get a free gift.

What's to stop me signing up 10 made up names on my domain?
Do they really work?
Is the catch just a huge amount of spam in my inbox?
Anyone ever done one and had any luck?

IIRC the "Offers" that you have to sign up for cost you money, and the ten people you get to sign up with you, therefore getting your friends to pay for your <strike>wee</strike> wii, they have to then do the same to their 10 friends to get the same!

Theres nout in this life for free......
