If I buy one of these:

will it increase the range of a laptop with a normal 'g' router, or does the router need 'rangebooster' technology as well?

According to the info below, it sounds like you can use this with a normal 'G' wireless router and still get improved range Bob..
The Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with RangeBooster is the simple way to add or upgrade wireless connectivity in your desktop or notebook computer. RangeBooster technology is a compatible add-on to standard Wireless-G which increases your wireless network's range up to two times, and its throughput by up to 35%. Unlike ordinary wireless technologies that are confused by signal reflections, RangeBooster uses two smart receivers at each end to detect and decode reflected signals at distances where standard technologies give up. You'll find that "dead spots" in the wireless coverage area are reduced, too.
Unlike other range-enhancing technologies, RangeBooster is fully 802.11 compliant, and a "good neighbor" to other wireless devices and technologies, using a single 2.4GHz channel as specified by the official wireless standard. And with RangeBooster you'll see a range improvement even when running a mixed network of RangeBooster and regular Wireless-G and Wireless-B devices

Problem with range to routers is always the shitty aerials in laptops etc so it'll negate that for you and in theory put you at the next lowest maximum range of the two devices communicating. The quality of your routers wireless chip/aerial/power output is also something maybe to check out and also interference from electrical devices.
